Add-Ons: IE VS Firefox

Thanks to the comment left by Mariam, on my IE7 RELEASED (for most)! entry I learned something interesting, Microsoft has a site, Add-Ons For Internet Explorer. Now given my experience (nearly 2 years now) with using Mozilla Firefox as well as Netscape, when I think add-ons I think extensions. Extensions, as in min-programs that integrate into and can be managed (removed, configured or disabled) via the browser. Extensions which are one with your browser. I was somewhat excited, thinking finally IE has moved into the 21st century! As I looked through this site I notice these “add-ons” are not extensions….

Is Google Secure?

I get a lot of flack from folks when I tell them I use Yahoo’s web ‘features’ (mail, calendar, maps, etc) instead of Google. Frankly, I don’t trust Google there are just too many ‘incidents’ involving Google and security. There has been a couple “leaks” about their GDrive code named Platypus online data-storage client. On Wednesday, Techcrunch posted this eye-opening article: Google: Security Mishaps and User Trust. Google pushing their “office strategy” is wanting businesses and individuals to use Google servers to store their documents. “The fact that unauthorized document access is a simple password guess or government “request” away…

Search Results In A New Tab

One thing that has annoyed me about Firefox 2 is search results (entered in the search box) open in current tab. With the Tabbrowser Preferences Extension in Firefox 1.5, I had it setup so the search results would open in a new tab. After some hunting in mozillaZine (Firefox 2.0 RC2 and Google) I found this result can be achieved in Firefox 2, with a simple about:config entry change: Access about:config via the extension button or by opening a new tab and typing about:config in the address bar Copy and paste into the filter field browser.search.openintab Double click the entry…

Update: Mozilla Japan’s New Mascot

Last month I wrote about the contest to name Mozilla Japan’s new mascot (as seen on the left). The contest has ended and the official name is Foxkeh. I still have to wonder what the other mascot entries were like if Mozilla Japan choose this one out of some 600. Yes it is a “Fire Fox” but still. I have collected some various comments about Foxkeh: ceebs’n’elvis on Team Vox: “Looks like that fox was eating some extra spicy hot wings…and is paying for it this morning!” SonOfPearl on Mozilla Links: “I think a slight re-design is needed to make…

Firefox 2.0 RC3 RELEASED!

Yep, you read that right the final milestone (before the main release) for Firefox 2 has arrived! I am a little surprised this came out today as the Developers Calendar had said on Tuesday. But I had a feeling it would today just based on the prior release patterns. You can download via the Mozilla FTP or go over to CyberNet News and use Ryan’s ‘download widget’ to ensure you get the right version. While you are there check out the link for the Firefox Launch Party to see if there is going to be one in your area (or…
