Google Inc. 189,70 -0,45 -0,24% had announced earlier this year Chrome would no longer support Windows 7/8.1 in the early part of 2023. Now Microsoft Corporation 454,46 +2,87 +0,64% is following suit with their Chromium based browser Edge.
The decision to no longer provide Windows 7 / 8.1 support for Edge users almost perfectly aligns with the end of support for Windows 7 Extended Security Update (ESU) and Windows 8/8.1 on January 10th, 2023.
“While Microsoft Edge and Webview2 Runtime versions 109 and earlier will continue to work on these operating systems, those versions will not receive new features, future security updates, or bug fixes,” the company said.
This does not mean Chrome and Edge will no longer work on Windows 7/8.1 machines. Rather it means there will not be bug and security fixes or access to features offered in future versions.
