Disable Firefox Add-on Controls

Note: This article may be updated in the coming days as we learn more about the new add-on controls in Firefox 8. As mentioned earlier this week, Firefox 8 introduced some new Add-on Controls that were designed more for single users. These incldued the ability to review and disable user installed add-ons on the first run of Firefox 8 as well as automatically disabling any 3rd party installed add-ons. However, there is a minor glitch in that corporate/enterprise bundled add-ons are classified as 3rd party install add-ons and therefore will be disabled by default. In a corporate/enterprise environment most users are…

OpenDownload²

A reader commented about my add-ons screenshot, that I was running OpenDownload 1.0.0 which has not been updates since January 2007 (Firefox 2.0.0.1 was the newest release back then). I’ve been forcing the extension to work either via Nightly Tester Tools or Add-on Compatibility Reporter. Oddly enough, this has worked fine over the last nearly 5-years, especially when so many old extensions broke when Firefox 4 was released this past March. They did point me in the direction of OpenDownload², which is an experimental add-on to replace the original OpenDownload from 2007. OpenDownload² was last updated in April 2011 and…

Removing Java Console Extensions

We mentioned the Java Console Extension as one of those extensions that a program (in this case Oracle’s Java) installs into Firefox without the user’s knowledge. Unless you are a Java Developer, this extension serves no real purpose for most Firefox users. Many users find they have multiple Java Console extensions and some (or all) are disabled. However, there is no way to remove the extension(s) via the Firefox add-ons manager. A long time ago we posted on how to remove the extension and thought it may be a good idea to post it again.Especially since some users may want…
